Commitment means…
Commitment is what separates the men from the boys; it is what you have to keep going when you want to quit. Quitting is easy. Quitting is safe. But successful people do not quit!
Today was a long day; I worked out; worked 8 hours, then I taught music lessons and met up with a friend for dinner, before coming home to tackle making lead sheets for my upcoming Noble Creatures Anniversary show and writing this blog post.
There is always a small voice inside me that says, “Why are you pushing yourself so hard? Is it worth it? Does anyone really care? Who will know if you slack off?” I have very good answers for these questions: I am pushing myself because I know I was born for greatness and I have the capacity to do more and be more. It is worth it because I know if I keep chipping away at it I will improve and succeed. I care and I’ll know if I slack off.
There comes a time in all of us where the good feelings we had about a project have left us; the novelty has worn off, the fun is over, and we have to decide if we are going to continue, with no end in sight.
When I wake up in the morning to workout I want to stay in bed. It takes a lot of effort to get out of bed and push play on that DVD, but I do it; 5 days a week; because I know doing something good for my body is worth it in the long run.
Most successful people get up early. Most successful people work out and do something good for their body each day. They know that they are a machine, and to keep a machine running properly there is maintenance that must be done.
They do what they have to do so eventually they can do what they want to do. That is what I want to do. I want to be my own boss; the master of my fate. I do not want to work for someone else’s dream my whole life; I want people to work on my dreams.
It all starts with a decision. I decided to get out of bed. I decided to go to work. I decided to work out. I decided to teach music lessons to make extra money. I decided to make lead sheets and write this blog post. There was a voice that said “No”, but I decided to ignore it and say “Yes” instead. Then I remembered that I said I would honor of all my commitments. People are depending on me in my challenge group to post about my workouts; at work co-workers depend on me to get that project done; at the lesson students depend on me to teach them; and the band depends on me to make lead sheets so I am prepared for the shows.
When I go to bed tired tonight; knowing I accomplished all the work I could do today I will count that as a success; A small success in a long line of successes. A person does not become successful overnight. It is not by giant steps, but my small, incremental baby steps that a person is able to go leaps and bounds over the competition and pass up all those who quit before them. It will always be difficult; there will always be excuses; it may seem impossible; but you will never know what is possible until you attempt the impossible. You will never attempt the impossible if you don’t decide to attempt it, and then stay committed to that decision. Then and only then will you succeed my friend.
