Lofty Goals, Procrastination etc…
Newness gets old quick:
When I set out to start a blog, it was like a field of dreams; if you build it they will come. Except I was sure from my years of music promotion that this is certainly not the case; making something cool does not mean people will necessarily come. Maybe it isn’t as cool as you thought?
As I write this post I am hustling to get it done, after a full day of exercise, work, meetings and deadlines. The novelty of the blog has worn off, but I want to stick to my goal of writing and posting every day, even if I have writer’s block, have overcommitted, and live in an imperfect world where I don’t have all day to write something thought provoking and inspiring.
Commitment:
In marriages that last a long time, couples realize the honeymoon phase ends rather quickly and what you are left with is a commitment to the task at hand. I resigned myself to write every day for at least a year; I wanted to post every day and write all my posts for the week over the weekend. That ended promptly after the first week. Now that I am in my third week, some have said, “Why don’t you just write less?” to which I reply, “Because I said I would commit to posting every day for a year!” This is why I am writing this post at 10:11pm before I head to bed to start the day all over again at 6am. The same way I commit to work, exercise, or music and do it even when I don’t really want to; that’s the way I commit to this blog. It is an exercise in “sticktoittiveness” and follow-through.
Procrastination club meeting postponed again:
As I sat down to write tonight after a long day, I went on the computer, only to be distracted by conversations, social media, and looking through old photos. I find that focus is not my forte and that whenever you should be doing something you end up doing anything but that. It happens to me at school, at work, at church; practically anywhere. I started studying mindfulness meditation so that I could focus on focusing and I have fallen behind on my studies, thanks to procrastinating. So to help everyone this week I will share a video by Brian Tracy followed by a great Ellen Degeneres clip both on procrastination.
This may not be my most prolific post, but I can honestly say I got it done. That is what really matters. T’aint what you do, it’s the way that you do, that’s what get results!
What are you putting off today, that you should be doing?
